Chrysa Parkinson is a performer and teacher living in Brussels.
She has been teaching regularly at P.A.R.T.S. since 2001, and has been a coordinator for the Research Cycle students since 2008 (collaborating with Steven De Belder and Salva Sanchis). Her focus as a teacher is on performance as a practice, using technique classes as a format, but also giving workshops, lectures and publishing essays and interviews on being a dancer. Since 1993 she has also been teaching regularly at open studios, universities and festivals in Europe and the United States (including Impulstanz, Bates University, and NYU, among others), and for companies (Rosas, Sasha Waltz, among others).
In 2010/11 she is touring and performing with Jonathan Burrows (Dogheart), Mette Ingvartsen (Giant City), and Rosas/Anna Teresa DeKeersmaker (En Atendant (2010), Cesena (2011)).
She was a member of ZOO/Thomas Hauert (2001-2010), touring yearly premieres in Europe, South America and Asia. Since moving to Europe from New York, she has also worked with Philip Gehmacher (Walk/Talk, Kaai (2011)), Eszter Salomon (The Bodiless (2010)), John Jasperse (Becky, Jodi and John (2009)), Deborah Hay (If I Sing to You (2008), The Match (2004)), Alix Euynadi (text and voice (2007)), Meg Stuart (Auf Den Tisch (2006)), Jonathan Burrows (Shreibstuk (2005)), and David Zambrano (Mandraking (2003)).
She was a member of Tere O’Connor Dance from 1987-2002 in New York, creating yearly premieres and touring internationally. While living in New York she also performed with Irene Hultman and Jennifer Monson, among many other artists. During that time she taught at Movement Research and at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, worked for The Field (a peer-based learning and support program for artists from various fields), and studied dance and somatic forms with Barbara Mahler, Irene Hultman, Simone Forti, Lisa Nelson, K.J. Holmes, Jocelyn Lorenz, Marjorie Mussman, and Cindi Green, among others.
She graduated from The North Carolina School of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Modern Dance when she was 19 years old (1983), and then attended London Contemporary Dance School as a one-year special student before moving to New York in 1985. As a child she studied Isadora Duncan dancing with Mrs. Qutizow (an original Isadorable), Cecchetti technique (in Verona, Italy), RAD with Kevin Montague (in Dublin), and Vaganova with Evelyn Schuert (in Berkeley, California), before going to North Carolina School of the Arts and studying Graham, Limon, Nikolais/Louis and SAB influenced ballet technique.
Chrysa was awarded a Bessie for sustained achievement as a performer in 1996. In 2008 Chrysa worked as a teacher researching performance practices in Montpellier with 6M1L and Ex.e.r.c.e. (initiated by Xavier Le Roy, and Bojana Cvejic). From her work in Montpellier she created an illustrated dvd essay called “Self-Interview on Practice.”
Chrysa was the cover artist for the fall 2010 issue of The Movement Research Journal. Interviews with her and articles have also been published in Etcetera, Sarma, De Staandard, and in Everybody’s publications.
